Inter Just Come Up Short In A Big Match
Inter needed to beat Milan if they are to close the gap on their neighbours who have started the season unbeaten and on-fire. Inter’s start to the season has not been too bad, but it pales in comparison to the frantic pace Milan and Napoli have set this season. We did not win the latest edition of the Derby Della Madonnina but at least we did not lose and the gap between the two teams did not get bigger.
Common Theme In Big Matches
Inter’s performance in the derby warranted
a win but after a very good recent record over Milan, I always fear Inter might
lose to Milan as they did last season and because in derbies, the form book
goes out of the window. However, it has become a theme for Inter in big matches
this season; play well but fail to score enough goals to win it. Inter has
failed to beat Atalanta, Lazio, Juventus and Milan in Serie A and Real Madrid
in the Champions League despite playing well in most of these matches. The only
match Inter struggled in was against Atalanta and each match had a common
story. We did not take our chances or did not create enough when we were
dominant to win the game.
Details Of What Went Wrong In Big
Matches
In the match against Atalanta, we overcame
a rocky period in the match to come back in the game and had we converted a penalty,
we would have won the match. A little unlucky. Against Lazio, we were in control
for 70 minutes but failed to get a second goal and then gave away an unlucky
penalty for a handball that you cannot do much about, before the infamous goal
on the counter-attack as we had a player injured. Against Juventus, we had some
half-chances, but we did not take them and did not create enough clear-cut
chances to score. We gave away another soft penalty to concede a late equalizer.
Yesterday morning against Milan, we took the lead and made an unusual error in
defending a free kick to gift Milan a goal. Like against Atalanta, we got a
penalty and missed it again. We then missed some chances to extend our lead and
ran the risk of conceding. In the Champions League, against Real Madrid, we had
lots of chances but did not convert them and got sucker punched late in the
game.
We Need To Do More In Big Games To Win
Overall, you can deduce that we were unlucky,
and we are due a change of luck in these matches. However, as a team, we need
to do more as well to score. It is no good to just blame our luck. We need to show
greater determination and accuracy in front of goal and in creating chances. It
is ironic for a team that is the highest scorers in the league that the reason
we are not winning these big matches is our profligacy. We have another tough
match coming up after the international break which is always a tricky period. Let
us hope we find our shooting boots and can win it or at least get a bit lucky
to win it. I would take it any which way it comes.
